The Property & Evidence Unit of Kings Mountain Police Department is responsible for maintaining the security, integrity and chain of custody of all property that comes into their possession in accordance with state laws and department policies and procedures.
Under direction of the Captain of Administrative & Support Services Division, Evidence Specialists are responsible for receiving, storing, releasing, and disposal of evidence, found and safekeeping property.
Evidence ---- Property related to the commission of a crime. Items held as evidence may only be released after the criminal case is completed and a final disposition is received from the case officer or the District Attorney’s Office. Evidence Specialists do not have the authority to release evidentiary property without a final disposition.
Found Property ---- Found property is lost or abandoned and not suspected to be connected with any criminal offenses.
Safekeeping --- Safekeeping property is placed in the custody of the department on behalf of the owner for temporary holding and protection.
This is to ensure necessary preparatory work is completed as much as possible before arrival. Evidence Specialist will advise what documentation is needed prior to appointment.
