The Kings Mountain Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards (OPS) supports the overall mission of KMPD by providing valuable support services to the department and citizens of Kings Mountain.   The OPS is under the Assistant Chief of Police. Other duties that fall with the scope of work in this unit include Commendation, Complaints, Administrative Investigations and Public Information Officer.

Complaints

One of the primary purposes of the Office of Professional Standards (OPS) is to ensure the integrity of the Kings Mountain Police Department through the objective and intensive investigation of allegations of police misconduct. Integrity and transparency of a police force are vital to maintain the respect and cooperation of the community that is served. Accordingly, the OPS is principally responsible for helping the Kings Mountain Police Department maintain its credibility and respect, both from the public and among its members.

Guidelines for filling a Complaint on an Employee

The Kings Mountain Police Department accepts complaints from any source,  whether made in person, by mail, over the telephone or internet. Complaints can be filed through the following methods: 

• In Person— At the Police Department ask to speak with the Office of Professional Standards Sergeant or any on-duty supervisor.  

• By Phone– Call the Kings Mountain Police Department at (704) 734-0444 and ask to speak with the Office of Professional Standards Sergeant or any on-duty supervisor. 

• By Mail— Mail a written statement to:

Commendations

As a community-oriented law enforcement agency, the Kings Mountain Police Department strives to make your contact with the Police Department professional and informative in every way.  When a Kings Mountain Police Officer, Telecommunicator, or other department employee has provided you with excellent service in the commission of their daily duties , you can recommend a commendation for that employee.  

The Kings Mountain Police Department is proud of its employees.  Citizen communications regarding the performance of our personnel are always welcomed. We would like to hear about your experience so that we can pass your comments on to the appropriate people.

• In Person: Complete the “Officer Commendation” portion of this brochure and submit to the Kings Mountain Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards Division.

When commending an employee, try to remember the name of the employee and the circumstances of how you were helped. Commendations received will result in the employee being notified of your gratitude and will be recorded in the employee’s personnel file.  In addition, annually our awards committee reviews all reports of outstanding performance and an appropriate award may follow.
