Recruitment
The recruitment, selection, and retention of both high-quality candidates and law enforcement officers is a current nationwide challenge in the law enforcement profession today. It has always been an important issue; however, today, the quality and quantity of candidates have been more difficult to find by many law enforcement agencies across America. The Kings Mountain Police Department will strive to recruit and hire the most qualified persons to fill vacancies for both sworn law enforcement positions and civilian. It is also the policy of the Kings Mountain Police Department to strive for ethnic and gender composition of employees in approximate proportion to the makeup of the available workforce in the department’s service area and to establish a recruitment plan to accomplish this objective.

Located in the foothills of North Carolina at the intersection of interstate 85 and U.S. Highway 74, Kings Mountain is ideally located between Charlotte and Ashville, NC. At the doorstep of Crowders Mountain State Park and Kings Mountain National Battleground, Kings Mountain offers is residents a wide range of outdoor activities.
KMPD currently operates under an annual budget of over 6 million dollars. There are (63) full & part time employees consisting of (43) full & part time sworn positions, (12) full & part time Telecommunicators, (2) Administrative Executives, (1) Records Clerk and (5) School Crossing Guards. The department’s structure offers employee with a range of exceptional opportunities in law enforcement operations such as: Patrol, Criminal Investigations, VICE, School Resource Officer, Lake Patrol, K-9, Traffic Enforcement, and Community Oriented Policing.

Hiring Process
Congratulations on your decision to enter or continue a career in law enforcement. The application process for the Kings Mountain Police Department includes several steps and takes approximately 2-4 months. Please review the steps below of our hiring process.
Step 1: City of Kings Mountain Application
Complete the online application and attach your F3 form (Criminal Justice Standards for LEO, Sheriffs Standards for Telecommunicator). For best results, use the current F3 form linked here. Please do not convert the form from pdf or attach additional documents.
Step 2: Oral Review Board:
The Oral Review Board consists of a member of our recruiting team to include sworn or non-sworn employees. Depending on the outcome, you may receive an invitation to continue onto the next step of our hiring process the Background Investigation.

Step 3: Background Investigation
The Kings Mountain Police Department background investigation is the most time-consuming step in the hiring process. During this step you will be assigned a trained Background Investigator who will guide you through the process of gathering important documents and state required forms. A complete and thorough review to include employment history checks, criminal history checks, driving history, Individual references (provided & developed), and family member interviews will be conducted during this step. It is important throughout the hiring process to be open, honest and transparent of your background. If conflicting or questionable information is found, an immediate dismissal from the hiring process will be recommended by your background investigator.
Step 4: Interview with Chief of Police / Conditional Offer
Upon successful completion of the background investigation and a positive recommendation from the investigator, an interview with the Chief of Police will be scheduled. If approved by the Chief a conditional offer for employment will be made.
Step 5: Psychological / Medical / Drug Screen
After receiving a conditional offer for employment from the Chief of Police, your file will be forwarded to the Office of Professional Standards Captain who will set up a psychological, medical, and drug screen through the FMRT Group in Charlotte NC. You will be required to complete a pre-evaluation online test before your appointment date. On the date of your appointment you will complete all three evaluations during your visit so be prepared to spend several hours onsite.
Step 6: Firearms Qualification
Upon a suitable recommendation from the FMRT Group and no issues with any medical or drug screening conducted, you will be scheduled to qualify with a Kings Mountain Police Department Firearm’s Instructor.
Step 7: COKM New Employee Orientation
Congratulations!!!! You have successfully made it to the final step of the Kings Mountain Police Department’s Hiring Process. You will be scheduled to attend the City of Kings Mountain “New Employee Orientation” at the Human Resources Office. Completion of this orientation is necessary before you are provided a “Start Date” with the police department and continue or begin your career in the law enforcement profession.
