Overview Power Lines

The City of Kings Mountain’s Electrical Department is responsible for the distribution of electricity to over 4,500 customers. This work includes but not limited to installing electrical power poles, setting and removing meters, street/security lighting needs. Electrical line installation, reading over 14, 000 meters per month, and monitoring the flow of electrical current as it is distributed to our customers.

We have continued to make system improvements to our electrical and meter reading divisions to make for a more efficient system. The citizens of Kings Mountain can be proud of their electrical system. Our system is in great shape. If we continue to be aggressive in our Tree Trimming, Peak Generation, System Maintenance, etc. it will continue to pay great dividends for our customers in the future.

Operations/Facilities

Peak Generation:

The City owns and operates two Peak Generation Facilities within the City of Kings Mountain. The total capacity of generation exported is 9,525 kilowatts of electricity. The generation is used to offset the kilowatt cost the City pays for wholesale power.

Our Peak Generation is fueled by diesel engines that burn an average of 1000 gallons of fuel per hour and is operated approximately ten (10) hours per month. This operation is a great savings opportunity that is passed on to our customers. These facilities are operated by a very high technical computerized system and monitored daily by the Electrical staff.

Substations:

The City owns and operates three (3) electrical substations. The voltage at which our stations receive electricity is 12470/7200. We then transport this same voltage throughout over 200 miles of main line throughout the customer area. We then step this voltage down through distribution transformers to deliver power to our customer’s homes @ voltages below 600 volts. These stations are made up of state of the art equipment and are the backbone of our system.

Scada (System Control and Data Advisory)

The City’s Electrical & Gas Divisions are monitored through our SCADA System. We monitor and collect data on a minute by minute receiving process. This system monitors the vital parts such as substation voltages, ampage, peak generation, load peaks, voltage fluctuations, natural gas pressures and usage. Our system was installed in the early 1990’s and was upgraded in 2000. In 2009 the City is installing the latest state of the art upgrade to our current SCADA system.

Line Construction/Equipment

  • The City maintains over 500 miles of total electrical lines throughout our customer service area.
  • We maintain over 2000 Distribution Transformers.
  • We maintain over 2000 street and security lights throughout the City.
  • We read over 13,000 electrical/gas/water meters per month.
  • We maintain and attach to over 2800 utility poles through our service area.
  • We maintain all City owned traffic signals within Kings Mountain.
